Program Description

IAPE Intensive English Programs take place in different cities in Mexico and typically enroll teachers who do not yet have the English proficiency required for the IAPE Teachers’ Collaborative.

IAPE Intensive English Programs are offered periodically throughout the academic year in close collaboration with state education authorities who provide in-kind support for the program.

A IAPE Intensive English Program consists of eight days of intensive English instruction, taught by certified Rassias immersion instructors, followed by two days of instruction in Rassias teaching techniques. During these two days, participants learn to implement many of the same techniques that they have experienced during the first part of the program.

Whenever feasible, the IAPE Intensive English Program incorporates participants from previous IAPE Teachers’ Collaboratives as Rassias Apprentice Teachers. This structure provides these teachers with further opportunities to perfect their mastery of the Rassias Method while also providing for a sustainable infrastructure for mentoring, networking, and ongoing peer support which are central to IAPE’s mission.

Profile of Participants

The IAPE Intensive English program is designed for English language educators in Mexico who work with under-resourced populations and have an Institutional TOEFL score between 425 and 499. The program seeks dynamic and creative teachers who have made a difference in the lives of others, and who look to continue their professional growth and development as English teachers. Teachers with higher English proficiency are encouraged to apply for the IAPE Teachers’ Collaborative.

Commitment

The goal of the IAPE Intensive English Program is to create a community of innovative and committed English language educators who will work together to transform English instruction in Mexico. Toward this end, IAPE and its teachers make a commitment to each other. IAPE provides and maintains the IAPE Virtual Community Forum to provide teachers with follow-up support from program staff and fellow IAPE teachers. IAPE also offers periodic follow-up workshops to IAPE participants in Mexico. In turn, participating teachers agree to continue to teach English at public institutions in Mexico for at least three years and to actively engage in the IAPE Virtual Community.
