In the face of earthquakes and hurricanes, we have been busy this summer gearing up for an important year ahead. Worldfund's 10-year anniversary is coming up in 2012. Thanks to your support, since our foundation in December 2002, Worldfund has invested US$12 million in Latin America, and is currently impacting some 340,000 children annually.
Worldfund has evolved dramatically over the past 10 years. We started our education work in Latin America by providing scholarships and capex funding to non-profit schools serving poor neighborhoods in nine countries. Since our foundation, Worldfund has developed and now manages three intensive training programs for public school teachers in Mexico and Brazil. Our programmatic challenge for 2012 and beyond will be to meaningfully grow our training programs within Brazil and Mexico and expand to additional Latin American countries.
One of the things we are most proud of is how local Mexicans and Brazilians have taken the lead in expanding our programs, which is critical to making them sustainable. For example, our new IAPE On-Site Coordinator in Valle de Bravo, Mexico, is Raul Lopez, a past participant from our program who did so well, we hired him! A group of Mano Amiga Chalco teachers, who implemented our arts literacy program, Amiga Cartonera, recently trained teachers at Mano Amiga Puebla to implement this same program, since they found it so successful. Mayra Toledo recently joined our team in Mexico, along with eight Mexican trainers, for our principal training program. Next week in São Paulo, Brazil, Worldfund will hold a week-long intensive session for seven new Brazilian trainers for our STEM Brasil program. Our aim is for our programs to become an integral part of how local states work with their teachers and principals.
Speaking of Mano Amiga Puebla, Worldfund board member Carlos Labarthe, and his family, spearheaded a local fundraising campaign to fund the construction of a much needed sports field at the school, which has been used by the entire community.
Finally, on a different note, keep your eyes open for our impending launch of a new logo and 'look' ahead of our anniversary year.
