Student of the Month — Hope for the Next Generation

Each month, Worldfund highlights the unique situation of one of the thousands of impoverished students receiving a high-quality education at Worldfund's partner schools. These stories demonstrate how a child’s development within his or her unique educational environment can help break the cycle of poverty. In addition, they serve as constant sources of inspiration for our team and supporters.

FEBRUARY 2008 > HUGO

Seven-year-old Hugo attends Instituto Mano Amiga de Santa Catarina, one of Worldfund’s partner schools in Monterrey, Mexico. Hugo is a shy boy and an excellent student who enjoys learning. He most recently earned a 9.4 out of 10 grade point average!

Sadly, Hugo has suffered from numerous medical problems, including the inability to hear in his left ear, a missing vertebra due to a lack of folic acid while he was in utero, and dental issues. In addition to providing him with a high-quality education, Hugo’s school has helped him obtain medical treatment and a new hearing aide which has lead to a marked improvement in his performance at school.

Because of the intellectual formation and medical support that Hugo receives, he will be able to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, a graduate of Instituto Mano Amiga de Santa Catarina, who is now studying Mechanical Engineering at the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon.
